The Saxted Green Satchel PDF Pattern by Charlie's Aunt includes sewing instructions and pattern templates for creating a design inspired by 1940s evacuee military-style satchels. This simply constructed bag is roomy, practical and yet very chic with its unusual asymmetrical front pocket and flap. The Saxted Green Satchel can be made with a self-fabric strap or a purchased strap. The pattern also gives instructions for adding an interior patch pocket. Finished size is 13"H x 16"W x 2 1/2"D.

Materials needed:

  • For whole bag including strap in one fabric: 1 1/4 yds fabric
  • To make with a purchased strap:1 yd fabric
  • For all combinations, you will need:
    • 3/4 yd lining fabric
    • 3/4 yd firm sew-in interfacing (and optional of batting)
    • 2/3 yd of 36” wide fusible interfacing
    • 40” x 5” fusible web (or interfacing)
    • magnetic snap
    • (2 or 3) big buttons, or six small buttons
  • For purchased handle:
    • 3/4" x 36" leather or vinyl strap
    • 5" x 4" Piece of fusible web for tabs
