The Day Hiker Bag PDF Pattern by Henny Penny Patterns includes sewing instructions and pattern templates for creating a bag that takes you through your hike with style, with the features you need such as a water bottle holder, key holder, sandwich bag, adjustable shoulder strap, and insulation to keep everything cool! Finished size is 12"W x 11"H x 3"D.

Materials Needed:

  • 1 yd Fabric A – Main body of outer bag, 2 outside pockets
  • 1/2 yd Fabric B – Front flap, back pocket flap, 2 outside pocket linings, 2 tabs 4” X 4”
  • 1/2 yd Vinyl or Laminated Fabric – Lining of main bag, outside of sandwich/snack bag;  OPTION:  Heat N Bond by Therm O Web to make your own vinyl fabric.  This comes in a package of 2 yards by 17” and is plenty for this pattern project.  Follow the instructions given on the package.  If you wish to use this option, add 1/2 yard to Fabric B (making it 1 yard total) and iron-on the vinyl to this Fabric B.  You may also use 1/2 yard of a third fabric and use the iron-on vinyl instead.
  • 1/2 yd Insul-Bright® - Insul-Bright is by the Warm Company and helps keep your water cool and your sandwich/snack fresh.
  • 1/4 yd Interfacing (Pellon 987F or equivalent) – Interfacing for 2 outside pockets, the front flap, and the smaller flap for the back pocket.
  • 9" of 1" wide Elastic – To hold water bottle in place
  • 16" of 1" to 1 1/2" wide ribbon, trim, webbing, etc.  - Decoration for the back flap; TIP:  Do not use the thin, silky ribbon – use a heavier gauge ribbon (grosgrain) or trim.
  • 3" of Velcro (Hook & Loop Tape) – cut into three 1” pieces
  • 18" of 1" wide Ribbon, webbing, etc. – key fob to hold your keys
  • 1" lobster claw/swivel snap
  • (3) 1" D-rings, O-rings or rectangular rings
  • 1" Buckle – Center bar can be sliding or fixed in placed
  • 60" of 1" wide Webbing - for adjustable handle
  • Fray Check™ by Dritz
