Quilt a Run-About Tote in your favorite fabrics for errands, trips to library or the beach, or for toting produce home from your local Farmers’ Market or grocery store. Divided outer pockets on both sides of the tote and a zipped inner security pocket make it easy to organize everything inside and out. Add the optional attached coin purse that drops down inside the tote for additional safe and handy storage--for your cell phone, make-up, and/or your change and credit cards.

Fabric Suggestions: Directions follow for using doublelayer quilted fabric that you make yourself using 2 coordinating fabrics. Choose one print for the outside of the tote and the matching, unquilted outer and inner pockets, and a second fabric for the lining side of the quilted fabric. You will need a third coordinating solid or print for the contrasting bottom panel. Optional rickrack trim outlines the pocket and bottom panel edges.

Materials Needed:
44/45”-wide fabric with 40” of usable fabric width (allows for preshrinking)

  • 1-5/8 yards for the outside of the tote and the inner and outer pockets (for fabrics with or without one-way designs
  • 3/4 yard for the tote inside fabric layer
  • 1/2 yard 45”-wide contrasting print or sturdy woven fabric for the bottom contrast panel (one-way designs are not suitable). If you are using quilter’s cotton or other lightweight fabric for the bottom panel, you will also need a 16” x 16-1/2” rectangle of medium-weight fusible interfacing for added support.
  • (2) 18-1/2” x 22” rectangles of lightweight

NOTIONS:

  • 9”-long coil zipper for inside zipped pocket
  • 3-1/4 yards 1”-wide webbing (cotton or polyester) for straps
  • Ready-made double-fold binding for inside pocket finish (or make your own binding from scraps)
  • Optional: 2 yards contrasting jumbo rickrack for the upper edges of the outer pockets and bottom panel

Optional Coin Purse Notions:

  • 7”-long coil zipper
  • 1/4 yard 3/4”-wide grosgrain ribbon
