The Day Hiker takes you through that hike with style and with the features you need such as a water bottle holder, key holder, sandwich bag, adjustable shoulder strap, and instructions for insulation to keep everything cool! Finished size is 12"W x 11"H x 3"D.

Materials Needed:

  • Fabric A – 1 yard (Main body of outer bag, 2 outside pockets)
  • Fabric B – ½ yard (Front flap, back pocket flap, 2 outside pocket linings, 2 tabs 4” X 4”)
  • Vinyl or Laminated Fabric – ½ yard (Lining of main bag, outside of sandwich/snack bag)  OPTION:  Heat N Bond by Therm O Web to make your own vinyl fabric.  This comes in a package of 2 yards by 17” and is plenty for this pattern project.  Follow the instructions given on the package.  If you wish to use this option, add ½ yard to Fabric B (making it 1 yard total) and iron-on the vinyl to this Fabric B.  You may also use ½ yard of a third fabric and use the iron-on vinyl instead.
  • Insul-Bright® - 1/2  yard (Insul-Bright is by the Warm Company and helps keep your water cool and your sandwich/snack fresh.)
  • Interfacing (Pellon 987F or equivalent) – ¼ yard (9” x 44/45”) (Interfacing for 2 outside pocket, the front flap, and the smaller flap for the back pocket.
  • Elastic – 9” long x 1” wide (To hold water bottle in place)
  • 1 piece of ribbon, trim, webbing, etc.,  1” to 1½” wide  and 16” long (Decoration for the back flap) TIP:  Do not use the thin, silky ribbon – use a heavier gauge ribbon (grosgrain) or trim.
  • Velcro (Hook & Loop Tape) – 3” total cut into 1” pieces
  • Ribbon, webbing, etc. – 18” long x 1” wide (key fob to hold your keys) NOTE:  I use the word “Key fob” to denote the strap that will hold the keys in place in the front pocket.
  • 1 lobster claw/swivel snap – 1”
  • 3 D-rings, O-rings or rectangular rings – 1”
  • Buckle – 1” (Center bar can be sliding or fixed in placed)
  • Webbing (for adjustable handle) – 60” long x 1” wide
  • Fray Check™ by Dritz
  • Teflon Foot for sewing machine (or tape the bottom of your regular foot) – This is for sewing the vinyl
  • Heavy duty/denim or jeans needle for your sewing machine
  • Optional:  Wonder Clips from Clover
